One pivotal outcome has been the heightened awareness regarding external engagement and entrepreneurial activities among our project partners’ staff. Interviews and focus groups in each institution have led to an increased awareness among the staff, prompting them to reflect on their actions and engagements. According to one partner, there was a notable change in attitude among academics, with an initial phase of hesitation shifting to active participation in discussions.

Furthermore, the project has facilitated a deeper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses within partner organizations. Jönköping University highlighted their gained insights into internal dynamics and academic perceptions. A member from the university shared, “As project partners, we have gained a comprehensive understanding of our organization and our academics’ perspectives on external engagement and entrepreneurial activities,” highlighting the newfound clarity achieved through this process.

The project’s impact has also sparked a new motivation among partners to start new initiatives. Partners are excited to launch fresh ideas that match the project’s values, creating an atmosphere that supports new ideas and working together creatively. “We are proposing to start an annual external engagement awards, and we listened to the academics and hosted an event to help with networking,” noted one organisation, reflecting the project’s proactive approach to foster collaborative initiatives.

A crucial element contributing to the project’s success has been the focus on understanding the needs, challenges, and motivations of academics. Through engaging focus groups and facilitating dialogue, the project fostered a sense of community among participating academics. Partners noted the solidarity and identification among academics regarding the difficulties in executing external engagement activities due to lacking academic policies. This realization urged the necessity of amplifying academics’ voices to institutional leadership to bridge the gap between academic strategies and global innovation trends.

As we continue to develop the strategy guides and toolkit, these foundational changes promise to reshape higher education cultures, creating spaces that embrace innovation, collaboration, and the holistic growth of academia. Not only within our partnership, but in all institutions interested in the results that we produce.
